Sharing a Seat at the Table

Emily Porter with her family

With her estate gift, Emily Porter ’04 hopes to pass on what Scripps gave her: confidence and a seat at the table in both the workplace and the world.

When is the best time to include Scripps College in your estate planning? It’s never too early…

Having celebrated her 15th reunion year in 2019, Emily Porter ’04 has become one of our youngest alums to include Scripps College in her estate plan. After earning her BA in economics and psychology at Scripps, Emily went on to study law at USC and practices as an estate planning attorney. She’s advised clients from all walks of life on everything from creating their plans to administering estates—experience that’s confirmed for Emily the critical importance of planning for your family’s security as early as possible.

As parents, Emily and husband Alex have also made an effort to teach their three young children the value of giving back, encouraging them to share a portion of their allowance with a charity. When the time came to write their own trust, the couple chose to make a special provision for Scripps College—a decision rooted in the strengths Emily gained during her time at Scripps and her desire to model philanthropy and leadership to her own children.

“Scripps gave me the confidence that I had a right to a seat at the table, both in the workplace and the world at large,” she shares. “I give back to Scripps to support its ability to continue to shape young women into the confident leaders we need.”

Starting your estate planning early is one of the best financial decisions you can make for your family.
