Scripps Classmates Team Up to Make Their Next Reunion Memorable

ClassmatesEach spring, class reunions draw Scripps alumnae back to campus to reconnect with friends, visit favorite courtyards and common rooms, and join activities that celebrate what it means to be a Scripps College graduate.

Many Scripps alumnae also use the occasion to honor their relationship to the College by making a gift to support its future. In fact, three members of the Class of '71 are getting a head start on their 50th reunion by starting to plan that support now.

Maggie Collins, Tempe Johnson Javitz, and Janet Redding Richardson are encouraging their classmates to think about how they might join together to make a special reunion gift.

"I'm looking forward to our 50th because our class is such an energetic bunch," says Tempe. "Reunions are a great occasion to consider making a gift to Scripps, because together we have more of an impact. We can cheer each other on and make a bigger difference."

Contributing to a class gift is a great way to make this impact right away. Maggie, Tempe, and Janet have gone a step further by arranging a future gift to Scripps in their estate plans.

"I'm thrilled to designate Scripps in my estate plan so that a meaningful gift can be added to the Class Scholarship endowment," Maggie explains. "I can imagine, in 2050, a young woman receiving the scholarship from our class and benefiting as we did from a Scripps education. And maybe that young woman, not even born yet, will find she can contribute to Scripps later in her life so that others benefit as she did."

"I'm including Scripps in my estate plan because I found out how easy it is to set aside a percentage of my estate for Scripps," Tempe adds. "Putting a percentage in your will doesn't require you to state a specific amount."

"Now that some of life's big responsibilities are done," says Janet, "I plan to increase the percentage of my estate that will eventually go to Scripps, to help a future Scripps student enjoy this amazing experience."

For Maggie, Tempe, and Janet, reunions provide an opportunity to celebrate today while supporting the Scripps of tomorrow.

"I always come away from a reunion marveling at the variety of paths these creative women have taken," says Janet. "The foundation of a Scripps education and the continuing thirst to learn are a terrific combination."
